ET-CC workshop

Today, the ET-CC workshop on „Latest topics on connections between weather and climate, and renewable energy systems” has been successfully conducted. Thirty participants with various backgrounds, such as research institutions, industry, public institutions, met to discuss latest topics that connect meteorology and energy economics. In lively discussions, the participants defined several important research problems that must be tackled in the future to improve energy forecasts and long term investments.

Work­shop “Tran­si­tion to power sys­tems with weather-de­pen­dent gen­er­a­tion” 

The workshop “Tran­si­tion to power sys­tems with weather-de­pen­dent gen­er­a­tion” was held on November 7 and 8, 2016 in Cologne, Germany, at the Energiewirtschaftliches Institut (EWI).

It was a joint effort of the University of Cologne Emer­ging Group on Ener­gy Tran­si­tion and Cli­ma­te Chan­ge and the University of Cologne Forum Ener­gy.

Initially, the scientific research performed within the ET-CC project and the University of Cologne Forum Ener­gy has been presented. Subsequently, the workshop consisted in oral presentations (~20 minutes) with a main focus on high-resolution meteorology and power system economics. Finally, the opportunity of future collaborations has been discussed.

ET-CC far up north: Ny Alesund

ET-CC member Nils Küchler set up a 94 GHz cloud radar in Ny Alesund:

"It transmits and receives electro-magnetic radiation, and is used to derive cloud properties. The transmitted radiation is backscattered by cloud particles, whose attributes (size and vertical velocity) determine the properties of the backscatter signal (intensity and frequency). Hence, the received signal contains information on the cloud."
