WP3: Evaluation framework

Icon for WP3: A magnifier

Based on the real-time observations and model runs of various complexities, an evaluation framework will be established. Such an approach has been proven to be very valuable (Crewell et al., 2008; Neggers et al., 2012) to identify model and instrument deficits. Particular emphasis will be placed on the combination of large eddy simulations (LES) with observations to produce a high-resolution analysis of the atmospheric state, which is physically consistent in time and space. For this purpose instrument simulators (available to the PIs for coarser scales) need to be developed. Consideration of explicit cloud microphysics is required to exploit the full potential of the observations. Data assimilation at small-scales is at the frontier of research and the exploitation of vertical pointing and scanning JOYCE data within a 2D-VAR or Kalman Filter offers exciting possibilities and will be developed and implemented in WP3.
