WP6: Impact of climate change on energy transition

Icon for WP6: The earth

In WP6, we will embark collectively on studying the impact of climate change on energy transition in central Europe, using the tools developed in this project. The assessment will focus on (1) the impact of climate change in the solar/wind combined renewable energy resource distribution and (2) in energy economics. Given the IPCC AR5 scenarios, and using the modeling/monitoring tools developed in WP1-4, we expect to generate high-resolution probabilistic maps of solar/wind combined power for central Europe, and using the tools developed in WP1-3 for selected key sites. The projected data will then be used in the energy economics model developed in WP4-5 to examine the impacts of climate on future energy pricing and energy investment risks. Specific questions such as how valuable would a network of cloud remote sensing sites be for improving solar and wind forecasts, what if every major solar power plant had an SCM running with input from a local supersite, and under changing climatic conditions, where are the most suitable site for future solar and wind power plants, will be studied.
